Ruhi Book 9

Gaining an Historical Perspective

Gaining an historical perspective is the focus of the ninth course of the Ruhi Institute.

Unit 1: The Eternal Covenant
The Eternal Covenant is the major theme explored in Unit 1. Participants explore such concepts as God as unknowable essence; developing the attributes of God and spiritual powers; spiritual faculties; the love of God as the source of all creation; the infinitude of God's grace; the need for spiritual thirst; the all-pervasive knowledge of God; the powerlessness of human beings relative to God; the Greatest Name of God; and progressive revelation as explained in the Kitáb-i-Iqán.

Unit 2: Passage to Maturity
The impact of Bahá’u’lláh’s Revelation on the collective life of humanity is the major theme explored in Unit 2. In exploring this theme, participants reflect on the
role our community has to play in advancing the stupendous civilization He has envisaged.

Unit 3: A Sacred Enterprise
In Unit 3 participants systematically examine key concepts informing the approach to societal transformation being taken by a community committed to social change but refusing to engage in violence and political revolution, civil disobedience, and sedition. They explore such topics as a Bahá’í view of history; reconceptualisation of power; the Baha’i community’s involvement in society at large; engagement in political activity; endeavours as manifestations of love; the necessary posture towards the guidance of the Universal House of Justice; use of scientific method; thinking in terms of process; capacity building in the three protagonists of society; accompaniment; continuity of action; the importance of focus; integration and coherence; building unity; and the Major Plan of God.

Service Outcomes
The capacities built include the ability to understand the eternal relationships between the realm of God, the realm of the Manifestations of God, and the realm of creation.

for Ruhi Book 9

The Eternal Covenant and the impact of Bahá'u'lláh's Revelation on the collective life of humanity are the major themes explored in Gaining an Historical Perspective, which is still under development by the Ruhi Institute.

Ruhi Institute

Bahá'ís everywhere are engaged in a global process of learning that is helping to build their capacity to apply the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh to the transformation of society. As a contribution to this learning process, the Ruhi Institute carries out action and research in the field, in order to develop programs and materials that enhance the capacity of individuals and communities to serve humanity.

The main sequence of courses is organized so as to set the individual, whether Baha'i or not, on a path being defined by the accumulating experience of the community in its endeavour to open before humanity the vision of Baha'u'llah's World Order.

The very notion of a path is, itself, indicative of the nature and purpose of the courses, for a path invites participation, it beckons to new horizons, it demands effort and movement, it accommodates different paces and strides, it is structured and defined. A path can be experienced and known, not only by one or two but by scores upon scores; it belongs to the community. To walk a path is a concept equally expressive. It requires of the individual volition and choice; it calls for a set of skills and abilities but also elicits certain qualities and attitudes; it necessitates a logical progression but admits, when needed, related lines of exploration; it may seem easy at the outset but becomes more challenging further along. And crucially, one walks the path in the company of others.
