Making Sense of Data

Making Sense of Data is a text used in the third year of the Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program. It seeks to enhance the capacity of young people to draw conclusions about the world around them by using numerical data. Through the readings and the exercises, young readers begin to recognise that the investigation of reality requires the ability to draw upon numerical data, but they also become aware of certain pitfalls. Specifically, they come to see that there are aspects of the world which cannot be measured with numbers and consider some of the ways in which data can be manipulated to tell stories and reinforce biases.
The story follows a fifteen-year-old high school student, in his quest to understand the negative social forces that contribute to challenges facing his school and his neighbourhood.
