Journey to a Mountain

The Story of the Shrine of the Báb, 1850-1921

The golden-domed Shrine of the Báb, set in exquisite garden terraces on Mount Carmel in Haifa, is a UNESCO World Heritage jewel and a potent symbol of the Bahá’í Faith’s vision of a peaceful global society founded on the oneness of humanity. For the first time, this volume reveals its establishment in full detail, drawing on never-before-seen photographs, maps and source materials in English, Persian and Turkish. From these fragments emerges a compelling narrative of extraordinary achievement amid grave peril.

It begins with the daring rescue of the Báb’s casket after His execution in Persia and the ensuing decades of clandestine concealment. A secret overland and sea journey delivers the remains to Ottoman Palestine, where ‘Abdu’l-Bahá—then in captivity—oversees the building that fulfils Bahá’u’lláh’s 1891 directive. The 1909 interment beneath the golden dome, dubbed “Queen of Carmel,” transforms a hidden treasure into an enduring emblem of unity and hope.
