Purpose Beyond Profit
For many decades business has operated according to the tenets of neoclassical economic theory, where the primary obligation of corporations is to maximize financial return for shareholders. However the larger mandate for business is changing.
Although shareholders still want results, other stakeholders want results as well and these are not necessarily measured financially. Stakeholder theory is proposing an alternate way of doing business by encouraging consideration of both economic and non-economic factors in corporate decision-making.
